Meredith + Owen {and Bradley too!}: Greensboro Wedding Planner

18 Nov

The first thing you notice about Meredith and Owen is the smiles. Both have such huge, joyful and beautiful smiles. They have the smiles that make you want to smile. The second thing you notice is the most handsome little redheaded boy that is floating by them everywhere they go. This is Bradley, their son, who also lost is first tooth right before the ceremony!

I can’t tell you how much joy filled this place on their day — when they made it official…. and the biggest smile was Bradley’s as his Mom and Dad now had the same last name.

I loved the bright and clean colors, with a pop of yellow and pink….. the simple touches, the personal details …. (And can I just say how much I am LOVING the bright PINK heels! These are my kinda girls.)

Owen and Meredith made it official at the Weir-Jordan House in Downtown Greensboro with some fabulous vendors! From a handmade arbor to a basket full of “dancing shoes” .. the details were taken care of and the bride and groom, along with their families and friends, could enjoy the merriment of the beautiful day.

Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your day and best of luck to the Hobgood family, Party of Three!

Why I Believe in Love …

Why I Believe in Love …

Do You  Believe in Love? Maybe you have been broken. Maybe you have been crushed, betrayed or hurt. Your heart feels fragile and delicate all of the sudden. I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be that way. Everyone has a journey they must walk and a story that needs to be told, so what’s yours?

For me, I have always been a believer of love… in love with the idea of love. I craved relationships, being needed and having my ‘person’.  I think I was so in need of someone that I clung onto the wrong guy because it was the right time, so I thought. Does that make sense? Fresh out of college, I was ready to get my life started. Full of energy and optimism, I was ready to get going and he just so happened to want to get going with me. We were married in December of 2005 and I was thrilled to get my story started. What I didn’t know is that my story had begun long before I met him.

6 month later I was crushed. It felt like a boulder had landed on my heart and wouldn’t let up. This hole I was buried in was unforgiving and dark and I finally knew where the term HEART-BROKEN came from.

Then one day—I remembered that my story began long before I met him. There was someone who had always loved me. Always stayed with me and never betrayed me.

With a fresh perspective and strength from my faith… I slowly began to climb out of that pit and WHAM! BAM! BOOM! It happened. HE happened!  24396_379713546751_4671522_n

I had interviewed and gotten a job working for the National MS Society. Jimmy, found me online and emailed me asking if I liked the job. Evidently, he had also interviewed & was curious about who beat him out for the job. I still don’t know how it happened that from that first email of 1 sentence, we built what we have today. We also figured out that it wasn’t the MS Society, but Muscular Dystrophy that he interviewed for. I don’t know if it was fate, or God that lead him to me …. but I’ll tell you this, I fall to my knees and pray every night that it did.24396_379713561751_2206874_n

I now believe in love not because I need it, but because I have been loved. I have felt it… experienced it…. treasured it. Patient and strong.  Steady and unrelenting. UNCONDITIONAL. For me. I KNOW that love can heal all wounds, and he loved the scars that were left on my heart until those scars disappeared … replaced by pure joy! He loved me when I didn’t think I needed it…. when I certainly didn’t deserve it … and when I didn’t love myself. He took my hand, and led me where I was always meant to be.

As we celebrate 6 years together, and our 3rd wedding anniversary this month, I feel lucky. My journey was a bumpy one. My story, not easy to recall. But here I am, way down the road…. And I am humbled by the blessings in our lives. Those blessings call us Mom and Dad.

I am so happy that he sent me that email.

I know now that I was given a bumpy start so that when I am in the presence of a bride, smiling at her Groom, I can truly appreciate what they have and I remember that my job, is the best one, because I get to be part of countless happy journeys!

I love you Jimmy.

That is my story … what’s yours?

THE WAIT IS OVER! Ultimate Cocktail Hour: The Photo Shoot!

14 Jul

_MG_9989Have I told you lately that I LOVE my job? It is the thing that fills me with joy and makes me feel like I am accomplishing something great in my life. I help couples start their life together with a happy memory! It’s a bonus when I get to share my passion with the readers of a beautiful magazine.

One of the aspects of the wedding day that I enjoy planning for is the cocktail hour. It’s that awkward hour between the ceremony and the reception where your guests are left to wait. It’s also an opportunity to do something fun and different!

_MG_0151SMI was honored to be able to share my planning tips for an AWESOME cocktail hour with the readers of the newly released issue of TriadWedding’s Magazine. And just for the fun if of it, I planned a photo shoot to go along with the article to show some of the tips.

A Letter of Graditude

Happy Birthday to Merrymaking Events!

December is always a special month for me. It’s a great time to reflect on the past and plan for the future. I look back at all the wonderful things that happened throughout the year. December is an extra special month for Merrymaking Events because it was the month I officially started Merrymaking Events back in 2008.

As the wedding season of 2012 is winding down, we begin to embark on our 5th year in the business. It has flown by! I am grateful that I am able to share my love of events, and my love of love, with so many throughout the year.  I am thankful to have so many wonderful vendors that I have gotten to know. There are some beautiful people in this industry who have generous hearts and creative souls. I am lucky to know them and work with them.

I feel lucky to have the clients I do. Sometimes I wake up, look around and feel like ‘it’ shouldn’t be this easy. I get to work with wonderful people, planning such a special event in their lives. I feel honored that they choose me to trust and I take that honor very seriously. I LOVE that essentially, what I do, is help them create a perfect memory.  They will always look back on their wedding day, and I want them to unconsciously smile because the feeling they get with that memory is one of so much joy!

I am fortunate that I am able to have Ashley Bodenheimer on my team. Having known her for a number of years, our paths kept crossing and I know it was meant to be that she be a part of Merrymaking Events. She is friendly, compassionate, sassy, professional and very organized… everything a great planner is. I look forward to watching her work grow even more in 2013.

In this industry, it is all about trust, offering something unique and professional experience. I feel like over the past 4 years, we have really come into our own. We have the experience (Just when I thought I saw it all) and we have the vision (No cookie cutter, one-style, boring weddings here). All of this gives us the trust and creditability in the industry to continue on our path.

As I reflect, I want to say a very grateful thank you to all of the brides who trusted us, photographers who captured it for us, the DJs and Bands that gave us something to sing about, the venues for providing the perfect backdrops and so many others who helped us get where we are, doing what we love.

Enjoy your holiday season and we’ll see you in 2013!

The Service of Exceptional Vendors

1 Jun

In economics, a service is an intangible commodity. They cannot be touched, gripped, handled, looked at, smelled, tasted.

Service is the one thing that you should focus on for your big day. Let me explain why.

We have all experienced HORRIBLE service and EXCEPTIONAL service. It is the one thing that can make or break your day. It baffles me every time I experience a rude waitress or an egotistical customer service rep because I can’t see how they are still in business with such a flawed business strategy.

More and more it seems that companies are not concerned with giving exceptional service, especially in the wedding industry. It is a unique industry because it is made up primarily of first-time, non-repeat customers. A wedding is a one-time event and doesn’t have repeat business… so if you’re unhappy with the service on your wedding day, vendors may not necessarily care.

I have an arsenal of stories of vendors who, in my opinion, have chosen to run their business primarily for the money that a wedding can bring in, without any concern for the happiness of the couple and the service they provide that couple on their wedding day. We also have our vendors that we will recommend all day long for going above and beyond for our mutual client.

Just like kindergarten, there are vendors who are awesome team players and pitch in to make it a fabulous event and there are vendors who place blame and responsibility on others, collect their check and hit the road.  So, how do you know in what way a vendor will treat your event before it’s too late?

It‘s what we specialize in. We can help you pick the exceptional vendors. We believe in the happiness of our clients…. it’s our passion…. and that starts with a team of exceptional vendors. That’s why we are called merrymakers…

Everyone deserves a perfect wedding day. When you focus on hiring the BEST vendors, your event will flow smoothly and perfectly because you have the team behind you to make it happen….. isn’t that the most important thing?

We think it is.

MME is Growing! Meet Our NEW MERRYMAKER …

20 Apr

 Ashley Bodenheimer, Event Consultant

From Kat:
I am so happy to introduce y’all to our newest merrymaker, Ashley, who  joins Merrymaking Events from Grandover Resort in Greensboro. I met Ashley years ago and we instantly hit it off, having a lot in common…. down to attending the same college! I am thrilled to welcome such a positive energy to the Merrymaking Events team. I know her attention to detail and wonderful attitude will make many dream weddings become a reality. She is wonderful to work with and a great person to know. Welcome to the team, Ashley!

From Ashley:
I’m a southern woman that exudes class and LOVES to radiate true southern hospitality. I’m carefully considerate of my clients’ feelings and personality through the planning process and am a friend and ally through it all.

I strive to give you what you want with a TWIST. My sassy attitude with a sweet southern drawl proves it easy to get what we want with HONEY (You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.) Like any true southerner, schmoozing is what I do best! Chatting up vendors to get the best prices and services is my forte.

After earning a B.S. in Communication, I joined forces with the American Cancer Society planning social events including galas, golf tournaments, etc.

Realizing I had a knack for planning and executing social events I wanted to move on to strictly weddings and celebrations. I went to work planning weddings and special events for one of North Carolina’s exclusive resorts, The Grandover Resort in Greensboro. Working in a hotel setting, I learned how to focus on logistics, but had very little opportunity to showcase my creativity. I love to create new ideas and watching them flourish.

Business, like Love, is all about the timing. Having known Kat for some years, when the chance to work with Merrymaking Events corresponded with “good timing” in my personal life, I decided it was the perfect time to live out my dream.

I’ll sweep you off your feet with fresh ideas and my calming sense of professionalism. I want to plan YOUR perfect day so give me a call and we can schedule a consultation where we’ll sit a spell and chat about your big day.

Let’s get started!
